When I finished my coaching certification in 2001, I knew absolutely nothing about marketing or networking.
One of my coaching mentors said I should start attending local networking events.
A few days later, my former boss from Cellular One told me about a new networking group his consulting firm started.
I attended one of the first meetings of the Bay Area Consultants Network ready to land my first coaching client.
The meeting started with everyone at each table sharing their elevator pitch.
Elevator pitch?
I started to sweat.
What is an elevator pitch?
What am I going to say?
Finally, it was my turn.
"I'm Ted Prodromou and I'm a life coach"
Nobody knew what a life coach was in 2001.
"I help people..."
I didn't know what to say next.
They didn't teach me this in certification.
I sat there in silence waiting for something brilliant to come to me.
It never did.
Finally, someone asked me what I did before I was a life coach.
I told him I was in tech and was starting a new career as a life coach.
The timer went off and I was off the hook because my turn was over.
I've never been so embarrassed.
Needless to say, I had a lot to learn about marketing and networking.
20 years later, I'm still learning about creating crystal-clear offers (thank god elevator pitches are out of fashion these days).
Today, grabbing attention and communicating your offer is harder than ever.
How do you convince someone to stop scrolling and read your content?
The biggest mistake I see today is people trying to sell their product or service in a social media post.
Years ago, Perry Marshall taught me to focus on selling the click, not selling your product or service.
The goal of an online ad or social media post is to get someone to stop scrolling and click on your content.
The content leads them to your landing page where you share your offer.
If your offer is crystal-clear, people will take the next step in your sales process.
Selling is a step-by-step process.
Would you like help creating your crystal-clear offer?
